Hello, I’m Anita James and aromatherapy has dramatically changed and shaped my life for the past twenty years. You’re reading this as you are considering starting your own aromatic journey. Whether you’re new to aromatherapy or a therapist wanting to deepen your knowledge, I’d be honoured to hold your hand and guide you through an uplifting and fulfilling learning experience

Let me tell you a little about me, my family and how aromatherapy found and helped me at a crucial time in my life.

Born and raised in Derbyshire, I’ve always been surrounded by gardens, allotments and open farmland. The scent of roses takes me straight back to being a carefree child on hot sunny days helping my Grandfather in the greenhouse and fruit picking with my Mum. I’m still a passionate gardener and forager as well as cook, and grow most of our fruit and vegetables on our allotment, together with lavender, calendula and other medicinal plants and cut flowers.

Aromatherapy supported me through an incredibly sad and worrying period of my life in the late 1990’s and has been my salvation every since. Let me tell you how . . . .

When I was six months pregnant with our first child, my husband was diagnosed with a brain tumour and sadly passed away when our baby son was five months old. On returning to work, I was made redundant and life was incredibly difficult for me and my baby as I struggled to see a way ahead.

Returning to my love of plants and the natural world, in order to grow a new life, seemed the right path for me. In 2001 I gained an Aromatherapy Diploma with Distinction from Shirley Price Aromatherapy, Essentially Holistic was launched in 2002 and my aromatic journey began. This continues daily and I’m as passionate today about aromatherapy and its incredible power as when I first started training all those years ago. In 2020 I qualfied as a florist and use my home grown flowers to create therapeutic bouquets with soul and meaning

I am particularly interested in incorporating aromatherapy into everyday situations and in 2003 I set up a project at the local infant school using aromatherapy in an educational setting. Its success led to similar projects nearby and I worked alongside the specialist support team providing aromatherapy to special needs children. I have spoken about mty work at conferences in the UK, Asia and the United States.

A firm believer in inspiring learners through active learning, in 2005 I began teaching aromatherapy and holistic therapies courses. Today I write and present aromatherapy training and continuing professional development all over the world. As a registered external examiner for the International Federation of Professional Aromatherapists, I regularly assess coursework for learners globally.

I have served on the IFPA council as CPD, Education and Accreditation Chair at various times. On the AIA (Alliance of International Aromatherapsits based in the US) board I have held the positions of a General Board Member in 2017 and Vice President in 2018. I am the currently a member of the Conference Committee.
